The turret deck ship SS Clan Ranald, was wrecked off of Troubridge Hill in January 1909 with the loss of 40 lives. Loaded mostly with wheat and flour at Port Adelaide, she was bound for South Africa when shifting of the cargo ultimately caused the tragedy.
Of the lives lost, 36 bodies were recovered including five Officers and 31 'Lascars'. They were interred at Edithburgh Cemetery with much kindness from the local people of this tiny little community. The cemetery is open all hours.
